Windsurfing: Blithfield Wind Direction: NW Wind Stength: F 4 gusting 5 Surf / Sea State: Rolling chop Air Temperature: 10 C Sea Temperature: Warmer than 4 April Weather: Overcast, occasional drizzle Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Mixed forecasts: Wind Guru were saying 11 knots (F3/4) dropping off in the
afternoon and Theyr were saying F4/5 all day. Desperate to go sailing for
1st time since 4 April (and third time in 2004).
10.30am and Blithfield was looking a little marginal. We rigged 8m sails
more in hope than expectation. Hit the water and wind seeemed to pick up;
solid planing conditions and a good direction straight down the lake. After
an hour it picked up more and whilst my 8.2 could take the wind, the Tiga
was smacking into the chop so came in and rigged 6.7m. Took this out on the
Bee. Difference in feel between the Bee and the Tiga was amazing, but not
quite enough wind to keep planing continuously (and too tired to keep
working the board back onto the plane), so went back out with the big
kit.
Gybing got worse through the afternoon, but 4 hours of continuous planing
for first time in ages hence 4*.
Gybing: still flipping the rig too late. Apparent wind keeps the 8m rig
sheeted in, so concentrated on forcing the sail open as the board carved
round. Ended up too close to the rig and standing up. 'Keep mast forward
and keep body low and back'
Theyr was spot on for wind forecast, plus less rain than forecast.
